Third Asian Population Forum and Training Workshop on Multidimensional Demographic Modeling

The Third Asian Population Forum (APF) on Population Projections for Socioeconomic, Environmental, and Climate Change Analysis is organized by the Asian Demographic Research Institute (ADRI) at Shanghai University in collaboration with IIASA.

 The APF is one of the main platforms of the Asian MetaCentre for Population and Sustainable Development Analysis to exchange research ideas and experiences of its collaborating institutes in comparative analysis of population and development issues across Asia. The third APF's primary focus is on demographic projections and their practical applications in areas of socioeconomic analysis, environmental assessment, climate change analysis, policy development, and scenario planning. This forum leverages recent advancements in demographic techniques, models, and tools, enabling to project population growth and changes in demographics across various dimensions, including age, gender, education, urbanization, household structures, and geographical distributions. These multidimensional and multiscale demographic projections, powered by improved methods and data sources, greatly enhance our insights into demographic trends at global, national, local, and spatial levels. They provide enriched data and references that inform scientific research, and socioeconomic planning, and facilitate environmental and climate change assessments. The third APF will build upon discussions that have taken place at the second Scenarios Forum hosted by IIASA in 2022, delving into the evolving needs and showcasing progress in extending global climate change socioeconomic scenarios, known as the Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs), to national and subnational levels. This extension will consider the unique socioeconomic, demographic, and environmental contexts of the region.

Forum program

Experts from the POPJUS program, including Anne Goujon, Moradhvaj Dhakad, Samir KC, Guillaume Marois, and Dilek Yildiz, will take on the roles of instructors for the training workshop titled "Multidimensional and Multiscale Demographic Modeling for Environmental and Climate Change Scenario Development." This workshop is a precursor to the APF and aims to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of how demographic scenarios are crafted within the SSPs framework. During the workshop, attendees will gain insight into the process of formulating assumptions about future trends in key demographic factors, such as fertility, mortality, migration, and urbanization. These assumptions are formulated both at the global and local levels, employing the Human Capital Projection Model from IIASA and the Community Demographic Model from the Population Council. Furthermore, participants will acquire the skills needed to generate projections that align with the SSPs, ensuring consistency in population size and composition across various dimensions like age, gender, education, rural-urban residence, ethnicity, and household structure. These projections will be created for global, national, local, and spatial levels, all utilizing these models as powerful tools.
