The NaturaConnect project, co-coordinated by Piero Visconti (IIASA) and the German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv), is hosting a stakeholder engagement event in Brussels to advance strategic planning for the Trans-European Nature Network (TEN-N). Organised by project partners EUROPARC Federation and WWF Central and Eastern Europe, and taking place 20 – 21 January in Brussels, the event will bring together decision-makers from across Europe to explore and contribute perspectives on the planning, governance, and financing aspects of TEN-N implementation.

Protected and conserved areas are sanctuaries for biodiversity: they are vital strongholds against climate change, biodiversity loss and land degradation. Yet, designating areas alone will not solve the problem—we need to ensure that these areas are coherent, resilient and well connected, as envisioned through the Trans-European Nature Network (TEN-N): a strategic initiative as part of the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030. The TEN-N will ensure that habitats and species can thrive across borders, enhancing biodiversity resilience in the face of climate change and land-use pressures.

On Day 1, NaturaConnect project partners will present key scientific analyses and results on prioritization and corridor design at a Pan-European Scale, with participants subsequently comparing EU priorities for conserving and restoring connectivity and expanding protected areas with national and sub-national priorities. Day 2 will explore with participants the enablers for planning and implementing connectivity and protected area expansion across scales. These will be crucial components of the final project report on strategic TEN-N implementation.

This event will provide practical insights into the project team's work and will enable participants to:

  • Leverage key project outputs for prioritizing protected area expansion, restoration needs, and ecological connectivity
  • Contribute to the final TEN-N implementation strategy across scales

The event is aimed at EU-level policy and decision-makers, EU Member State representatives, national and regional experts in government authorities, spatial planners, and international NGOs or projects working on conservation and connectivity projects.

This event is by invitation only.
