The IIASA Population and Just Societies (POPJUS) Program is presenting new empirical data at the annual event of the PREMIUM_EU project on 29 April 2025.
The aim of the Premium_EU project funded by Horizon Europe is to explore the impacts and benefits of European migration - between and within countries - and how it contributes to the development of vulnerable regions in Europe. In this year’s public virtual event “Rural re-population: Attracting skilled migrants”, policy makers and scholars discuss the causes and consequences of rural (re)population.
Claudius Ströhle from the Multidimensional Demographic Modeling (MDM) Research Group will present empirical data from a qualitative case study conducted in rural areas in Austria. Based on 26 interviews with Turkey origin migrants and their descendants (20) as well as with regional policy makers (6), Claudius will explore the challenges and potentials of arriving and staying in rural Austria. Based on that, findings from case studies in Poland, Denmark, and Turkey show how comparative data help to entangle the intersection of economic, social, and political conditions of migration and integration processes.
