The IIASA Population and Just Societies (POPJUS) Program is sharing new research findings data at the digital conference: “Rural re-population: Attracting skilled migrants” 29th April, 10:00-12:00 CET. This event is a collaboration between IIASA and 9 other institutes under the Horizon Europe funded migration and development project: PREMIUM_EU.
The aim of the Premium_EU is to explore unseen benefits of European migration – both between and within countries, how attractiveness strategies and smart migration policies aid the development of rural regions in Europe.
Policymakers and academics will share the digital stage to present and discuss their different perspectives on rural decline, integration barriers as well as what can be done about it.
Claudius Ströhle from the Multidimensional Demographic Modeling (MDM) Research Group will present nuanced insights from interviews with Turkish-origin migrants and local policymakers in rural Austria. What helps migrants feel at home in smaller communities? What gets in the way? And how do these experiences compare with rural regions in Poland, Denmark, and Turkey? Claudius will explore the challenges and potentials of arriving and staying in rural Austria and show how comparative data can unpack the complex interplay between economic, social, and political aspects of migration and integration.
