Geo-Wiki Earth Observation & Citizen Science

Geo-Wiki provides anyone with the means to engage in monitoring of the earth's surface by classifying satellite, drone or ground-level imagery. Data can be input via desktop or mobile devices, with campaigns and games used to incentivize input. These innovative techniques have been used to successfully integrate citizen-derived data sources with expert and authoritative data to address pressing policy-related questions (e.g. European environmental policy, SDG indicators and more).

Data from Geo-Wiki campaigns related to forests

Several data collection activities related to forest cover, forest biomass and forest management have been coordinated by IIASA’s NoDES group in the past

fairSTREAM toolkit of participatory approaches

In the IIASA Strategic Initiative fairSTREAM, we created a toolkit of participatory methods that can be adapted to facilitate co-production of knowledge. Co-produced knowledge integrates diverse scientific and social discourses to create relevant and legitimate opportunities in the context of complex problems. The TRUST Strategic Initiative, will expand this toolkit, highlighting its evolving nature.

Integrated model for BiodIversity distribution projectionS (ibis.iSDM)

The ibis.iSDM package provides a series of convenience functions to fit integrated Species Distribution Models (iSDMs). With integrated models we generally refer to SDMs that incorporate information from different biodiversity datasets, external parameters such as priors or offsets with respect to certain variables and regions.

Areas of global conservation importance for biodiversity, carbon and water

Spatial layers of global importance highlighting the upper potential value of conserving biodiversity, carbon and water assets under different area-based conservation targets.
Biodiversity, Ecology, and Conservation (BEC) Austria France United Kingdom United States of America

Participatory Scenario Planning

Scenarios as a decision-making tool help us to better understand the implications of a wide range of future possibilities considering existing development, strategies, and global interdependencies. Scenarios should be co-produced with their users, most often planner and decision makers.

Plant Functional Acclimation and Trait Evolution (PlantFATE)

Welcome to the world of PlantFATE, a novel eco-evolutionary vegetation model designed to unravel the intricate dynamics of forests and their response to environmental change. PlantFATE stands as a powerful tool to guide conservation efforts, inform policy decisions, and foster a deeper appreciation for the wonders of nature. Embark on a journey through the intricate tapestry of forest resilience with PlantFATE as your guide.

Global maps of terrestrial and marine habitat types

We provide a global spatially explicit characterization of terrestrial and marine habitat types, as defined in the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) habitat classification scheme, which is widely used in ecological analyses, including for assessing species’ Area of Habitat. The maps broaden our understanding of habitats globally, assist in constructing area of habitat (AOH) refinements and are relevant for broad-scale ecological studies and future IUCN Red List assessments.

Soil and Water Assessment Tool at IIASA (SWAT+)

A regional to global model designed to simulate and predict the dynamics of water quantity and quality under the influence of various drivers including; climate change, land-use transitions, socio-economic developments, and policy interventions.

Wild Life Model (WildLife)

While the full model is under review and development, this is an abbreviated description of its main purpose, components, assumptions, and variables, but without some details and equations.

Foodscapes - A global clustering of terrestrial food production systems (Foodscapes)

A set of global zoning layers are provided that identify broad homologues of foodscape classes. These are comparable in a minimum set of biophysical and management characteristics and can help to plan for possible interventions and leverage points for more sustainable agriculture.
