The Austria Fire Futures (AFF) Final Stakeholder Workshop brings together invited experts and practitioners, including forest owners, forest management, tourism organizations, local administrations, the respective federal ministries, relevant industry sectors, NGOs, science, and media, to discuss wildfire risks, updated ignition models, and new fire danger maps for Austria. The Final Stakeholder Meeting, organized by IIASA's AFE group, focuses on turning scientific insights into practical fire management and adaptation strategies.

Wildfire risk in Austria is rising. Once considered rare, fires are becoming more frequent and intense, especially in Carinthia, Styria, and Tyrol, driven by hotter, drier summers, land-use changes, and increased human activity.

The Austria Fire Futures (AFF) project, a collaboration between BOKU, IIASA, and BFW, aims to better understand these changing fire patterns and develop tools and maps to support emergency planning, forest management, and climate adaptation.

This Final Stakeholder Workshop brings together firefighters, foresters, policymakers, researchers, and the public to:

  1. Present the project’s key findings; including updated ignition models, tourism risk perception results, and high-resolution fire danger maps.
  2. Facilitate dialogue on practical next steps and how to apply this knowledge in real-world fire management and adaptation efforts.

Participation is by invitation only.
