The Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC), in partnership with the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), Stellenbosch University and the African Centre for Clean Air (ACCA) is providing financial and technical support to the country through the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) to implement the Uganda - Sector strategy for Organic Waste Management.

As part of this effort, the SOWU project organized a Multi-Stakeholder Design and Training Workshop for the Uganda - Sector strategy for organic waste management project from 26th to 30th May, 2025 in Kampala. The workshop brought together key stakeholders from government, academia, civil society and the private sector to:
- Participate in the Greenhouse Gas and Air Pollution Interactions and Synergies (GAINS) model training
- Discuss and develop a financing strategy for implementing the organic waste management strategy
- Establish a Community of Practice (CoP) on Organic Waste Management
- Co-design both a national waste sorting manual and the National Strategy for Organic Waste Management
- Take part in various side events and thematic discussions
The event also included visits to various waste disposal facilities as well as local markets to explore practical approaches to organic waste separation processes and current management.
This workshop marks a significant step toward building an integrated, data-driven, and inclusive approach to organic waste management in Uganda, aligning with national development and climate goals.
