As the world faces the growing risk of exceeding the 1.5°C warming threshold, understanding the risks and responses to climate overshoot across different disciplines has never been more urgent.
To tackle these critical challenges, the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) is gathering experts from around the world for the Overshoot Conference, set to take place from September 30 to October 2, 2025, at the Conference Center in Laxenburg, Austria. To foster this dialogue, the conference will bring together leading scientists, policymakers, and stakeholders to discuss key questions surrounding climate overshoot: What are the consequences of exceeding 1.5°C? Can we mitigate the impacts? Are impacts reversable after an overshoot? What adaptation strategies are necessary? How do we ensure fairness and justice in the response?
Discussions will focus on eight critical topics:
- Highest possible mitigation ambition under overshoot
- Carbon dioxide Removal: Sustainability constraints and opportunities
- Earth System responses up to net zero and beyond
- Climate impact (ir)reversibility
- Overshoot legacy and tipping elements
- Adaptation and adaptation limits under overshoot
- Loss and damage
- Legal and justice implications of overshoot
The conference aims to:
- Bring together leading scientists from diverse backgrounds to debate the importance of overshoot in different contexts
- Advance scientific knowledge by publishing key insights and findings
- Engage high-level speakers to foster interdisciplinary dialogue and policy discussions
- Identify research gaps for future scientific work on overshoot
- Contribute to a deeper understanding of climate overshoot and its policy implications among scientific, policy, and civil society communities
