Wolfgang Lutz will join leading researchers at the Second General Meeting of the Age-It Program — Italy’s national research network on ageing — to discuss how education, ageing, and human capital shape Europe’s demographic future.

The Second General Meeting of the Age-It Program, hosted by the University of Naples and the Hotel Royal Continental, will bring together researchers and experts from across the Age-It community to present and discuss cutting-edge work on ageing. The program emphasizes the integration of diverse disciplinary approaches and explores the practical, policy, and technological dimensions of population ageing.

Wolfgang Lutz, IIASA Distinguished Emeritus Research Scholar, will deliver an invited keynote address titled “The Future Burden of Ageing Looks Different Under a Multi-Dimensional Demographic Approach That Also Considers Education and Labor Force Participation.” His contribution will highlight how education and labour participation reshape demographic projections and alter the understanding of ageing-related challenges.

Participation in the Age-It General Meeting offers an opportunity to connect the Yidan Prize–supported project at IIASA with leading European research on ageing, resilience, and demographic change. The project’s focus on education as a driver of sustainable development and human capital resilience aligns closely with the themes of lifelong learning, skill adaptation, and productivity in ageing societies.

For over five decades, IIASA’s Population and Just Societies Program has pioneered demographic research linking education, health, and population dynamics to sustainable development. This engagement continues that tradition — bringing multidimensional demography to the forefront of discussions on how societies can respond to the opportunities and challenges of population ageing.
