The 5th European Climate Change Adaptation Conference (ECCA 2021) is a virtual event scheduled to take place from 25 May to 22 June 2021. A series of 9 webinars on pressing climate change adaptation challenges will precede the  high-level event on 22 June. This event is hosted by the European Commission and is followed by the annual European Research & Innovation Days on 23-24 June.

The declared focus on the 2021 ECCA is “the pressing need to accelerate the transfer of knowledge from R&I to policies and practices, including societal transformation and behavioural change, in order to increase resilience in Europe and beyond, in the context of rising climate risks.” IIASA is involved in co-organising this event as a partner in the RECEIPT project, which is one of the three Horizon 2020 projects (SINCERECASCADES and RECEIPT) that are co-organising ECCA 2021 together with the European Commission and JPI Climate. The co-organisers have invited a broad range of participants, including researchers, policy-makers, local authorities, practitioners in climate risks management, the private sector, NGOs, citizens organisations, and youth organisations.

On June 10, 2021, Veronica Karabaczek and Thomas Schinko from IIASA’s Population and Just Societies (POPJUS) Program, the Equity and Justice (EQU) Research Group, have been invited to co-organize a webinar entitled “Building back better: COVID recovery, resilience building and societal transformation”. The webinar will take place from 13:30 to 16:00 (CEST) and IIASA will lead a breakout session focusing on “Social Justice & participation”.

More than 400 participants have already signed up for this ECCA 2021 thematic webinar.
