The Wildfire Climate Impacts and Adaptation Model (FLAM) from the Agriculture, Forestry, and Ecosystem Services Group (AFE) will contribute to the Fire Model Intercomparison Project (FireMIP). This collaboration provides an opportunity for FLAM to engage with the broader fire science community and contribute to the advancement of global fire modeling. 

What is FireMIP? 

The Fire Model Intercomparison Project (FireMIP) is a global research initiative, launched in 2014, to advance the accuracy and understanding of fire models. Bringing together fire model developers and researchers, FireMIP aims to improve the performance of global fire models, enhance fire modeling accuracy, and reduce uncertainties associated with fire dynamics. By fostering international collaboration, the project contributes essential insights for climate adaptation, policy-making, and wildfire management. 

 

FLAM’s contribution and expected impact 

FLAM will contribute to the simulations within ISIMIP3b, focusing on quantifying climate-related risks at various levels of climate change and direct human influence. Its outputs—fire count, burned areas, and carbon emissions from wildfires—will be compared with other global-scale fire models developed internationally. Additionally, FLAM will join the family of IIASA sectoral models contributing to ISIMIP3b simulations.
