IIASA Deputy Director General Karen Lips will participate in the OSCE conference “Anticipating technologies – for a safe and humane future” at CERN. The event will focus on dialogue, trust, and joint approaches to strengthening peace and security in an increasingly complex world, aligning with Switzerland’s work on the UN Security Council.
Hosted by Switzerland in Geneva as part of its OSCE Chairpersonship, the conference will bring together senior representatives from participating states and partner countries, along with experts from science, the private sector, and international organizations. Discussions will examine how emerging technologies can be better anticipated and governed to enhance security and stability in Europe, balancing opportunities with risks while reinforcing cooperation and trust.
The conference follows an April 2026 visit by an OSCE delegation to IIASA for a high-level exchange on collaboration at the intersection of science, policy, and emerging technologies. Lips’ participation builds on this dialogue and signals a step toward closer cooperation between IIASA and the OSCE, with a shared focus on using science and technology to address global and regional challenges. Advances in areas such as artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, and neurotechnologies are reshaping economies and societies while also affecting the foundations of international security, creating new opportunities for resilience and crisis management, but also raising concerns around geopolitical tensions, inequality, and the misuse of technology.
