IIASA Director General Hans Joachim (John) Schellnhuber will participate in a high-level dialogue on Europe's ecological future at the Archipelago for Possible Futures Summit 2025, the official event of the New European Bauhaus taking place on Saturday, 10 May in Venice, Italy, during the opening weekend of the Venice Biennale.
Launched at the New European Bauhaus Festival in Brussels in 2024, the Archipelago for Possible Futures is a growing platform that unites organizations across Europe working at the intersection of science, technology, culture, and the arts. The Archipelago Summit 2025 will bring together leading thinkers, artists, technologists, and organizations to explore how Europe can reimagine its infrastructures—digital, ecological, and cultural—for a more sustainable, democratic, and inspiring future. From the depth of oceanic systems to the heights of supercomputing and AI, the Archipelago is a call to design new imaginaries and infrastructures for Europe’s ecological and digital transitions.
Schellnhuber will take part in a high-level dialogue on the future of sustainable and sovereign innovation. In a brief presentation, he will call for a re-entanglement of human civilization with Earth’s natural systems, promoting regenerative architecture and sustainable land use through the New Bauhaus Initiative focused on rebuilding for both people and planet. The discussion that follows will tackle policy impact, key challenges, and the EU’s ambitions for a green, resilient transition.
The panel comprises:
- Patrick Anthony Child, EU Director General for Environment
- Carlo Ratti, Carlo Ratti Associati, Curator Biennale Architechture 2025
- John Schellnhuber, IIASA Director General
- Iñaqui Carnicero, Secretary General of the Urban Agenda, Housing and Architecture, Spain
The session will be moderated by Francesca Bria, Chair of the New European Bauhaus Expert Group.
