As part of the fellowship of The Earth League, IIASA Director General Hans Joachim (John) Schellnhuber and IIASA Distinguished Emeritus Research Scholar Nebojsa Nakicenovic will be active participants in the 2025 Earth League Annual Meeting to be held in Hamburg, Germany.
Both Schellnhuber and Nakicenovic are internationally recognized pioneers in climate science and sustainability research, whose contributions have shaped major scientific assessments and global policy frameworks. They are part of a group of distinguished scholars strengthening the League’s mission to advance urgent, science-based strategies for planetary sustainability in times of accelerating global change.
The 2025 Annual Meeting will bring together leading Earth system scientists, policy experts, and institutional leaders for two days of collaborative working sessions, high-level dialogue, and public engagement. This year’s theme, Accelerating Sustainable Transformations in a Turbulent World, will bring attention to the urgent need for coordinated action across science, policy, and society.
The event will include breakout sessions and strategic discussions involving Schellnhuber, Nakicenovic, and other Earth League Fellows on topics ranging from decarbonization and risk governance to sustainable pathways, as well as a public forum at St. Katharinen Church on 4 June featuring a panel of Earth League leaders and global thought leaders, followed by an open Q&A session.
