The International Symposium on Climate-Driven Geohazards: Engineering, Science and Society (GEOS 2026) brings together international research communities to explore how climate change is reshaping natural hazards and to strengthen collaboration across engineering, science, and society. The symposium will address the increasing frequency, intensity, and unpredictability of landslides, floods, debris flows, and other geohazards, with a focus on enhancing resilience against natural hazard-induced disasters.
The symposium will take place on 31 August–2 September 2026 in Oslo, Norway. Organized by the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI) and funded by the Research Council of Norway, GEOS 2026 brings together international research communities to address the growing challenges posed by climate-driven geohazards, including landslides, floods, and debris flows, and to strengthen collaboration across engineering, science, and society.
In his keynote, titled Assessing and Managing Systemic Risks to Enhance Resilience against Climate-Driven Geohazards, Hochrainer-Stigler will present a new system-of-systems approach that aims to reduce complexity across different scales and improve interoperability between systems. The approach builds on systemic risk concepts, particularly network dynamics and the cascading impacts that natural hazard events can trigger in highly interconnected systems.
