MOSAIC project results and IIASA research on climate-resilient protective forests are featured during Austria’s Protective Forest Week 2026, including work on wildfire risk, decision-support tools, and the Alpine Resilience Web Atlas.
Research from the Interreg Alpine Space MOSAIC project is being featured during Austria’s Protective Forest Week 2026, highlighting innovative solutions to strengthening the resilience of protective forests under climate change.
The article, published on the Austrian Federal Ministry’s Schutzwald platform, presents key results from MOSAIC examining how climate change, wildfire, windthrow, bark beetle outbreaks, and compound or cascading events can affect the protective function of Alpine forests. AFE researchers Florian Kraxner and Andrey Krasovskiy contributed to the article together with Michaela Teich from the Austrian Research Centre for Forests (BFW).
Among the results highlighted are improved models and decision-support tools, Forest Living Labs and training sites, and the Alpine Resilience Web Atlas, developed by IIASA together with MOSAIC partners. The open-source platform brings together maps, models, datasets, field experiences, and stories on protective forests across the Alps. The article also highlights IIASA’s contribution through FLAM wildfire projections, which were combined with modelling of the future suitability of 28 Alpine tree species to identify areas of compound climate vulnerability.
