IIASA Deputy Director General, Karen Lips, will participate in the First Ukrainian–European Science Diplomacy Forum that will take place in Vienna on Thursday, 12 March 2026. The event will bring together senior representatives from European and Ukrainian ministries, the European Commission, UNESCO, international research organizations, funding bodies, leading universities, and Ukrainian science diaspora networks.

Organized by the Ukrainian Science Diaspora in Austria (USciDA) in partnership with European and Ukrainian institutions, the Forum serves as a platform for dialogue on science diplomacy, recovery, resilience, and international research cooperation. The program features institutional contributions and three thematic panels addressing the strategic role of the Ukrainian science diaspora in Europe, multilateral science diplomacy and global research alliances, and scientific cooperation across diplomacy, heritage, arts, and culture.

Lips will participate as a panelist in Panel 2: Science Diplomacy for Multilateral Cooperation: Global Scientific Alliances, where discussions will focus on how science diplomacy can strengthen multinational research partnerships and global cooperation in research and innovation.

Aligned with IIASA’s vision of championing science diplomacy to foster evidence-based international cooperation and inform policy, the Forum will also result in two policy briefs that will be developed jointly by Ukrainian and European scholars and shared with policymakers and institutional partners. These outputs will address science diplomacy as a tool for EU–Ukraine integration and academic integration and support for displaced researchers, underlining the event’s commitment to translating dialogue into actionable insights.
