Shared values define what we stand for as employees, as an employer, as an organization and as a research institute. They underpin how we carry out our work and how we work with each other. They shape our culture and enable us to work together to achieve our wider vision.

Organizational culture is a system of shared values and beliefs about what is important and what behaviors are appropriate, and it defines relationships internally and externally.

An organization's culture, when it is truly embedded, assists employees in achieving their goals as well as the organization's. It is reflected in daily practice and shapes the ways in which people behave and get things done.

Core values are traits or qualities that are considered not just worthwhile but represent an individual's or an organization's highest prioritiesdeeply held beliefs, and core, fundamental driving forces.

They are the heart of what an organization and its employees stand for and how they are perceived by the external world.

Core values become the compass that the organization uses to select staff members, reward and recognize employee performance, promote employees, and guide interpersonal interaction among staff members.

Acknowledging the importance of varied perspectives is embedded not only in the IIASA Strategy (2021-2030) and the Research Plan (2021-24), but also forms a fundamental pillar of the IIASA People Strategy, our HR Principles, and Code of Conduct. These frameworks aim to nurture and exemplify a workplace that values fairness, respect, openness, and a sense of belonging in all its facets. To maintain this over the long term, IIASA has enacted policies for fostering such a workplace and effective mechanisms for resolving disputes. These efforts are complemented by our mandatory Gender Equality Plan, which we implement in compliance with European Commission requirements for funding.

The IIASA Gender Equality Plan (GEP) is a comprehensive and cyclical framework designed to foster a more inclusive and equitable environment at the Institute. It serves as a roadmap to address gender disparities and promote positive change across all aspects of the organization.
