The IIASA Transformations within Reach (TwR) initiative is hosting a special consultation with experts under the theme, Reform of the Global Governance: Global Democracy for the Global Commons.

This consultation aims to discuss the idea of establishing a global parliament, which could serve as a platform for people around the world to deliberate and influence actions taken to deal with climate change, poverty, pollution, and other threats to human security. This form of global parliament would serve as a valuable complement to the current framework of the United Nations and other international organizations, which address similar challenges through multilateral policy processes. The goal of the consultation is to delve into the rationale behind establishing a global parliament, as well as to examine key parameters associated with its implementation.

Participants include the members of the Community of Science and Practice of the Transformations within Reach initiative - a selected group of experts from academia, public and private sectors, representatives from civil society with vast and diverse backgrounds, and IIASA scientists.

The deliberations from this consultation will inform the upcoming IIASA Flagship report, which intends to showcase significant findings from the institute's previous research that have greatly contributed to sustainability science over the last decades and outline a range of specific policy recommendations aimed at fostering sustainable development. Co-edited by Wolfgang Lutz, IIASA Interim Deputy Director General, and Shonali Pachauri, IIASA Transformative Institutional and Social Solutions Research Group Leader in the Energy, Climate, and Environment Program; the IIASA Flagship report will be presented in various high-level science-policy forums.

About the Transformations within Reach initiative

The Transformations within Reach (TwR-I) initiative was first launched in early 2020 as a joint undertaking between IIASA and the International Science Council (ISC) to glean lessons from the COVID-19 crisis for the future of society. The initiative brought together over 200 experts from various disciplines and every region of the world through a series of consultations to provide recommendations on what should be done to move towards a more sustainable world that would be more prepared for negative shocks. The main outcomes of the first project phase are the IIASA-ISC Consultative Science Platform:  Bouncing Forward Sustainably: Pathways to a post-COVID-19 world and the synthesis and thematic reports. The second phase of the Transformations within Reach (TwR-II) initiative coordinated by IIASA, aims to put forward recommendations on how to catalyze global transformation to sustainability by enhancing the way society makes decisions that affect sustainable development.
