IIASA has long-standing expertise on assessing measures to control pollution from human activities. This includes land-based sources as well as marine shipping in Europe and globally. IIASA is partner and work package leader on EMERGE, an innovative 4-year research project looking to find solutions to pollution caused by shipping.

The project is coordinated by the Finnish Meteorological Institute and comprises 18 partners from Scandinavia, the Mediterranean, the UK, and Austria.

Laxenburg near Vienna, Austria, where IIASA is located, has been chosen as the venue for the first EMERGE meeting as it is the most central location for the meeting: sitting roughly mid-way between the northern and southern partners. This will result in saving approximately 10% in air miles, time, and carbon emissions compared to hosting the meeting in Helsinki; the project coordinator’s premises. 10 partners will attend online.
