The 14th International Conference of the IDRiM Society entitled "Disaster Resilient Communities for Life" will be held on 28 - 30 August 2024 in Cartagena, Colombia. It is organized by Colombia's National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD) in collaboration with IDRiM and in partnership with various national and international organizations.

The annual conference brings together leading disaster risk management researchers with practice and policy from around the globe with the aim to promote knowledge sharing, interdisciplinary research, and the development on integrated disaster risk management approaches for eventually contributing to efficient and equitable disaster risk management implementation.

This year's conference encourages the scientific, practice and policy community to consider transformational perspectives beyond traditional risk management concepts, which seem more and more deficient in terms of well addressing emerging risks and uncertainties. As the nature of risk becomes increasingly systemic and complex, a need has been voiced to further identify what knowledge and measures are suitable for enhancing disaster preparedness for effective response and to “build back better” in recovery, rehabilitation, and reconstruction. This imperative and vision is shared by the host country Colombia, which has been pursuing collective responsiveness for the sustainable stewardship of ecological and social systems.

IIASA Research Group Leader Reinhard Mechler from the Systemic Risk and Reslience Group (SYRR) in ASA, as one of the founding members of the IDRiM Society, will present on "Reflections on measuring disaster resilience at community scale: lessons from applying the flood and climate resilience measurement tool".

Accompanied by the following researchers from the SYRR group:

Senior Research Scholar Stefan Hochrainer-Stigler will give a presentation on "Multi-Risk Instruments for Emergency Response: A multi-hazard and multi-risk assessment of the European Solidarity and Emergency Aid Reserve".

Senior Research Scholar Muneta Yokomatsu, who is a member of the Board of Directors of the society, will give an online presentation on "A simple model of the excess-of-loss insurance contract for a government in a disaster prone country".

Researcher Qinhan Zhu will give an online presentation on "Managing Sovereign Climate Risk in Vulnerable Developing Countries Smart Support Guidance for Donors and Policy Makers."

The IDRiM Society and IIASA

The IDRiM Society and its Journal (IDRiM Journal) were officially launched on October 15, 2009 in Kyoto, Japan, at the 9th IIASA-DPRI Forum on Integrated Disaster Risk Management (IDRiM Forum). The formation of the IDRiM Society was based on a long history of collaboration between the Disaster Prevention Research Institute (DPRI) of Kyoto University and IIASA. The decision to set up the IDRiM Society was based on the success of a series of nine IIASA-DPRI Forums on Integrated Disaster Risk Management organised by DPRI and IIASA.

The founding members of the IDRiM Society include Dr. Joanne Bayer (IIASA), Dr. Reinhard Mechler (IIASA), Prof. Norio Okada (DPRI), Dr. Aniello Amendola (IIASA), Dr. Peijun Shi (Beijing Normal University), Prof. Hirokazu Tatano (DPRI), Dr. Mohsen Ghafory-Ashtiani (International Institute of Earthquake Engineering and Seismology), and Dr. Ana Maria Cruz (DPRI).

Japan is one of the founding members of IIASA and research collaborations between IIASA and Japan have been highly productive since the Institute was founded in 1972.
