GEO/GEOSS: Earth Observation Policy

IIASA's wide-ranging role within the global GEO community allows it to influence current developments and to emphasize the crucial role  of open and transparent data in science.

IIASA is one of 67 official participating organizations in the GEO.  At the 2012 plenary in Brazil, ESM made an official intervention on behalf of IIASA, outlining the active role that IIASA plays in GEO and in supporting GEOSS.

IIASA was involved in 2012 in the following Earth observations areas:

  • Active participation in Austrian GEO events.
  • Co-leadership of GEO Task ID-03: Science and Technology in GEOSS.
  • Leader of the GEO subtask GEO AG, on global cropland mapping, another valuable contribution to the GEOGLAM initiative (Strengthening Global Agricultural Geo-Monitoring), currently being developed under the GEO Organization.
  • ESM has participated in many successful GEO projects, for example, EuroGEOSS, EGIDA, and EnerGEO, making numerous contributions to data access and interoperability.
  • In December ESM took part in the GEOBON (GEO Biodiversity Observation Network) All-Hands meeting in Asilomar, USA, providing GEO expertise on land cover inputs to ecosystem service valuation.
