IIASA Council

The Council is the governing body of the Institute. It sets IIASA strategy, determines financial and managerial policies along with IIASA research areas, and provides oversight of the Institute among other roles and responsibilities.    



The Council is the governing body of the Institute and is responsible for establishing relations with governments and multi-national bodies; for determining financial and managerial policies, and subject areas for research of the Institute; and for ensuring that the activities of the Institute are in line with its objectives, the provisions of this Charter and the interest of member institutions.

The Council appoints the Institute’s Director General (DG) and CEO, Deputy Director General for Science (DDGS) and the Chief Operations Officer (COO). The following Council Committees carry out the Council work:

  • Executive Committee
  • Finance, Risk and Audit Committee
  • Membership Committee
  • Research and Engagement Committee
  • Science Advisory Committee
