As Acting Chief Operations Officer, Jan Marco Müller provides administrative leadership at the institute and ensures that IIASA researchers are supported by an operational environment that facilitates the delivery of excellent research and science.
Following his PhD in Geography from the University of Marburg, Germany in 2000, Müller's career included assignments as Assistant to the Scientific CEO of the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) in Leipzig, Germany; Research Program and Communications Manager of the JRC Institute for Environment and Sustainability in Ispra, Italy; and Head of Business Development and Public Relations of the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (CEH) in Wallingford, UK. During these years, he also served as Secretary of the Partnership for European Environmental Research (PEER), the network of Europe's largest environmental research centers.
In 2009, he broadened his experience at the science-policy interface by becoming Assistant to the Director-General of the European Commission's Joint Research Centre in Brussels until 2012, when he was asked to join the recently appointed Chief Scientific Adviser to the President of the European Commission. He supported Professor Dame Anne Glover throughout her tenure, playing a key role in shaping the activities of the office. Following a five-month fellowship at the University of Colorado at Boulder, he helped to set up the European Commission's new Scientific Advice Mechanism in 2016/17.
He joined IIASA in April 2017 as the Head of the Directorate Office and coordinator of IIASA science to policy and science diplomacy activities. Since April 2019, he is the Acting Chief Operations Officer of IIASA until the Chief Operations Officer appointed by the Council, Christiane Pohn-Hufnagl, takes up her position on 1 July 2020.
