Energy scientists researched the long-term future of natural gas in Europe and its likely market penetration; they predicted an increase in the share of gas for primary consumption well into the 21st century. They also undertook research on the evolution of methane technologies.
IIASA was one of the first scientific organizations to conduct research into integrated zero-emissions energy systems. This research is still a "live" topic in the Energy Program today.
IIASA was a founder member in the 1980s of the International Energy Workshop, which is now one of the leading conferences for the international energy modeling research community.
