The Minister was accompanied by Christian Berger, specialist advisor in the cabinet of the Federal Ministry of Education, Science, and Research, and IIASA was represented by Director General Hans Joachim (John) Schellnhuber and Chief Operations Officer Christiane Pohn-Hufnagl.

The visit began with welcome remarks by Schellnhuber and Minister Holzleitner, highlighting the objectives and significance of the meeting. This was followed by a presentation during which Schellnhuber provided an overview of IIASA’s work in science diplomacy, its international partnerships – including collaborations with the United States and China – as well as its research excellence, visibility, and outreach activities. He also addressed selected cross-cutting issues at the interface of science, policy advice, and global sustainability and highlighted IIASA’s longstanding mission as a bridge-builder in times of geopolitical tension.

Following the presentation, Minister Holzleitner and IIASA leadership engaged in a joint discussion on existing and future cooperation opportunities, exchanging views on expectations, priorities, and possible next steps.

The visit continued with an informal meet and greet with IIASA Deputy Director General, Karen Lips, Program Directors, and the President of the IIASA Women in Science Club, highlighting the Institute’s commitment to inclusive scientific excellence.

Reflecting on the visit, Schellnhuber emphasized the importance of Austria’s continued engagement:

“Austria is not only our host country, but a vital partner in advancing science diplomacy for the global common good. The close collaboration between IIASA and Austria provides a strong foundation for addressing the complex sustainability challenges of our time. I look forward to deepening this partnership and shaping future endeavors together.”

Minister Holzleitner’s visit reaffirmed Austria’s support for IIASA’s mission to advance systems analysis and international scientific cooperation in service of global sustainability.

Amazon understory forests show short-term boost in CO₂ uptake – but this comes at a cost

Tropical forests are one of the planet's most important carbon sinks – often also called "the lungs of the Earth". But their future in a high-CO₂ world remains uncertain. IIASA researchers contributed to a new study, which suggests even small understory trees in the Amazon may initially buffer climate change more strongly. Their long-term capacity to store carbon could, however, be restricted by nutrient availability, highlighting the vulnerability of these ecosystems under future climate conditions.
