IIASA senior scientist Gregor Kiesewetter, along with fellow IIASA researchers Fabian Wagner and Laura Warnecke, are among the authors of an article recognized as winning National Champion for the United Kingdom in the 3rd edition of the Frontiers Planet Prize.

The Frontiers Planet Prize, launched on Earth Day 2022 by the Frontiers Research Foundation, celebrates transformative scientific research that delivers actionable solutions within the limits of our planet’s boundaries. With over 10,000 scientists, 640 institutions, and 24 national academies of science participating across 62 countries, the recognition of IIASA researchers once again highlights the Institute’s global impact and scientific excellence.

Led by Marina Romanello of University College London, the award winning 2023 report of the Lancet Countdown on health and climate change: the imperative for a health-centred response in a world facing irreversible harms, was selected by the Frontiers Planet Prize committee to represent the United Kingdom as a National Champion, distinguishing itself among hundreds of entries for its contribution to planetary health and Earth system science.

The study brings together insights from multiple disciplines to address urgent environmental challenges with science-driven solutions. The inclusion of Kiesewetter, Wagner, and Warnecke as contributing authors speaks to IIASA's role as a hub for interdisciplinary, globally relevant science.

"This recognition reflects the power of collaboration and systems thinking – two of the pillars that IIASA is built on and which is embodied through close ties with institutions in IIASA member countries like the UK," Wagner notes. "We are committed to contributing to research that doesn’t just advance knowledge but informs real-world strategies for staying within planetary boundaries."

IIASA extends its heartfelt congratulations to our researchers and collaborators on this remarkable achievement.

Centuries of net-negative emissions required to secure a safe climate future

Two new studies published in leading scientific journals conclude that stabilizing long-term climate risks will require sustained net-negative carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions for centuries. Approaching the problem from distinct perspectives – legal and technological feasibility on the one hand, and economic optimization under uncertainty on the other – the research converges on a consistent message: reaching net zero is not enough.
