IIASA’s demographic and modelling expertise supports Mozambique in a two-stage UNFPA-funded collaboration implemented in close partnership with the Ministry of Planning and Development (MPD). The first phase is the Population Situation Analysis (PSA) (through the end of 2025), which provided evidence based on demographic trends, inequalities, and future scenarios. The second phase is the National Roadmap on Population Dynamics (through the end of 2026), which builds directly on the PSA and translates its findings into practical, cross-sectoral policy options aligned with the Estratégia Nacional de Desenvolvimento (ENDE) 2025–2044.

Capacity Building in Mozambique
In October 2025, IIASA and UNFPA, in close collaboration with the Ministry of Planning and Development (MPD), organized a sequence of capacity-building and policy engagement activities in Mozambique linked to the PSA and the National Roadmap process. Following a high-level stakeholder consultation at MPD (Maputo) on 28 October to present and discuss the PSA findings and their policy implications, IIASA researchers led an intensive practical workshop (29–31 October, in Macaneta) for planners, statisticians, and demographers from MPD, the National Institute of Statistics (INE), Eduardo Mondlane University (EMU), and UNFPA. The training focused on the core methodologies used in the PSA, particularly population projection techniques, data analysis, and the integration of demographic variables into development and environmental planning, thereby strengthening national technical capacity and supporting institutional ownership of the PSA evidence base and its translation into the Roadmap. |
