The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) has been working for several years on establishing Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs) relevant to the use of aviation biofuels. To understand the potential impacts of aviation biofuel development, the GLOBIOM model has been used to contribute to the life cycle analysis of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAFs).

Working Group 5 on aviation fuels (WG5, previously named Fuels Task Group, FTG) under the Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection (CAEP) at the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) of the United Nations, has been working for several years on establishing Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs) relevant to the use of aviation biofuels under the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA). To understand the potential impacts of aviation biofuel development, the GLOBIOM model has been used within the activities conducted by the WG5 to contribute to the life cycle analysis of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAFs). IIASA has contributed to the work on the subtask of induced land-use change (ILUC) sending experts to WG5.

This project is a follow-up of five projects conducted in 2018-2019, 2019-2020, 2021-2022, 2022-2023, and 2024 for which IIASA has been providing support to the European Commission (DG MOVE) and EU Member States' topic experts.

IIASA mainly contributes to this project via the following main tasks:

  • Pursuing the work on ILUC modelling through GLOBIOM, to provide the ICAO WG5 with more complete modelling results and methods for ILUC and LCA assessment, as well as to document and make available if required the latest evolutions of GLOBIOM to inform WG5 in a transparent manner.
  • Taking part in the WG5 meetings and supporting and presenting progress and findings on the latest work on GLOBIOM.
  • Providing technical support and expertise to European experts at ICAO in view of WG5 sessions on ILUC related matters.
