Biography

Niklas Hinkel joined the Integrated Biosphere Futures (IBF) Research Group of the Biodiversity and Natural Resources (BNR) Program at IIASA as a research scholar in July 2021. His current scientific interests include the analysis of links between agricultural and energy markets and their environmental impacts. He is participating in the application and development of the Global Biosphere Management Model (GLOBIOM), currently focusing on induced land-use change from biofuel policies.

Prior to joining IIASA, Hinkel worked as a management consultant for McKinsey & Company and for a boutique consultancy specialized in the energy sector, where he optimized emission neutral energy systems for European countries.

Hinkel holds a diploma (master's equivalent degree) in Latin-American studies from the University of Cologne, Germany. He also holds a PhD in Economics from the Institute of Energy Economics of the University of Cologne. His thesis on quantitative resource and energy economics includes the estimation of power plant costs, as well as the simulation of technological innovation in the production of maize in Zambia, and a simulation of the interaction of food crops and biofuel in Zambia.
