Nadja Hahn

Nadja Hahn has worked as a journalist for the Austrian public service broadcaster ORF for 20 years and has earned a reputation as an excellent climate journalist. She has attended numerous United Nations Climate Conferences (COPs) and reported on them for ORF radio and TV. In her daily reporting to a mass audience, she critically questioned the political and economic developments in the field of climate and explained complex developments in an understandable way.

At ORF, she also created and presented a highly reputable radio show called #Doublecheck on the radio station Ö1. It deals with the influence of politics on the media. She specialized in raising awareness of fake news and disinformation. She is a member of the Oxford Climate Journalism Network.

“I am very much looking forward to the new challenge in this renowned international organization. In times of increasing disinformation, it is very important to make science more accessible to society. This applies to the field of climate, but also to many other hot topics, such as migration or artificial intelligence. I am particularly interested in IIASA's approach of systems analysis. I believe this facilitates political solutions and I want to contribute to this,” notes Hahn.

“We are excited for Nadja to join our team at IIASA. With her expertise, we trust that she will help to make IIASA even more visible in Austria and internationally,” concludes Barbara Kreissler, Head of the IIASA Communications and External Relations Department.

Amazon understory forests show short-term boost in CO₂ uptake – but this comes at a cost

Tropical forests are one of the planet's most important carbon sinks – often also called "the lungs of the Earth". But their future in a high-CO₂ world remains uncertain. IIASA researchers contributed to a new study, which suggests even small understory trees in the Amazon may initially buffer climate change more strongly. Their long-term capacity to store carbon could, however, be restricted by nutrient availability, highlighting the vulnerability of these ecosystems under future climate conditions.
