IIASA’s Population and Just Societies Program, in collaboration with the College of Population Studies at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand, is pleased to announce its upcoming annual intensive training course titled "Demographic Analysis with Applications to Aging and Health."
Mastering Demographic Analysis and Skills, with an Introduction to Generative AI for Problem-Solving
This program provides a comprehensive understanding of demographic analysis, covering key topics such as population age structures, period-cohort transformations, and advanced Excel techniques. Participants will develop data presentation skills using interactive graphical tools, construct life tables, and analyze mortality and fertility trends within a stable population framework. Technical proficiency is enhanced through large dataset management and an introduction to VBA. The course also explores innovative approaches to measuring aging, includes international case studies on aging and health, and covers standard and parameterized population projection techniques. Additionally, participants will gain foundational skills in R programming for data transformation, life table construction, and demographic modeling. To further enhance analytical capabilities, the program introduces Generative AI as a problem-solving tool, equipping participants with cutting-edge techniques for data analysis, pattern recognition, and predictive modeling in demographic research.
The course will be led by Professor Sergei Scherbov, a renowned expert in demographic computer applications and aging research. It is scheduled to take place from November 3 to 21, 2025, at the College of Population Studies in Bangkok, Thailand.
As population aging is a central focus of the training program, participants will learn and apply key techniques from the book Prospective Longevity: A New Vision of Population Aging, recently published by Harvard University Press.
