We are proud to announce that IIASA has joined GRIPP, a global partnership for sustainable groundwater management led by the International Water Management Institute to strengthen, expand, and connect current groundwater research and initiatives.

IIASA has a long history of developing effective and science-based policy advice related to climate change, energy security, population aging, and sustainable development. From a broad inter-disciplinary and nexus (water-energy land-food-climate-health-equity) perspective, groundwater is fast becoming an increasingly relevant area of research, as it is a critical component of the hydrological cycle, the environment, and the coupled human and natural system.

Understanding the role of groundwater in these very complex and interlinked systems at various scales is therefore often at the core of sustainable management of natural resources and the many trade-offs this implies.

The new partnership between IIASA and GRIPP will strengthen, expand, and connect current groundwater initiatives and allow IIASA researchers to work as part of a network with critical mass to confront today’s groundwater issues for the benefit of future generations. The overarching aim is to advance the agenda of sustainable groundwater management at local to global scales to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals; co-develop, document, and disseminate proven technologies, policies, and approaches; and to provide a platform for attracting, guiding, and implementing actionable research for sustainable groundwater management.

This joining of expertise is a testimony to the increasing realization that groundwater solutions are to be found through broader systems approaches and analysis and close collaboration between partners with a wide set of complementary backgrounds and skill sets. We look forward to exploring the opportunities that this new partnership will bring.
