A productive meeting between H.E. Ambassador Haytham Shoja’aadin of Yemen and IIASA Director General Hans Joachim (John) Schellnhuber set the stage for deeper collaboration on water security and regional cooperation. The exchange offered new momentum for science-based dialogue between IIASA and Yemen at a pivotal time for the MENA region.

Building on the themes of the recent Together for Water – Science Diplomacy to Advance Regional Cooperation in MENA” workshop, the discussion introduced fresh insights and reaffirmed a shared commitment to advancing sustained engagement. Ambassador Shoja'aadin highlighted Yemen’s multifaceted water challenges, noting opportunities for sustainable groundwater management and renewable energy–powered desalination. He also emphasized the importance of groundwater resources for Yemen’s culturally significant coffee production, aligning closely with IIASA’s scientific capabilities.

Both the Ambassador and IIASA leadership underscored science diplomacy as a valuable bridge-building tool that can foster trust and support regional stability. Their exchange reflected strong enthusiasm for expanding cooperation and developing initiatives that enhance Yemen’s water resilience while contributing to broader MENA-region dialogue.

IIASA looks forward to maintaining regular contact and exploring Yemen’s participation in future workshops on water resources management, further strengthening a partnership rooted in constructive, science-driven collaboration.
