In an interview with Austria's ORF, IIASA researcher Daniel Huppmann explained how the country's current heat extremes align with decades of climate science and what they mean for Austria's future.

On 5 August 2026, Lower Austria recorded a new national temperature record of 41.2°C, surpassing the previous day's record of 41.0°C in Vienna. IIASA researcher Daniel Huppmann spoke with Austria's public broadcaster ORF, explaining the scientific context behind the country's record-breaking heatwave, the growing risks posed by climate change, and the policy measures needed to accelerate the transition to a climate-resilient future.

Huppmann emphasized that Austria is particularly vulnerable to climate change, having warmed by around 3.1°C since the pre-industrial period, nearly twice the global average. He encouraged the public to examine long-term observational data, which clearly shows that the frequency of extreme heat has increased substantially over recent decades.

"Climate models have been predicting these types of weather events for decades," says Huppmann. He describes the increasing frequency and intensity of heatwaves and other extremes as a "normalization of the state of emergency", warning that such summers are becoming the new reality. "From a climate science perspective, the only surprise is that these extremes are occurring much faster than was predicted about ten years ago," says Huppmann.

He also stressed that reducing greenhouse gas emissions remains essential to limiting future risks. Alongside individual actions, such as adopting more plant-based diets and engaging in climate action within communities and organizations, Huppmann highlighted the importance of ambitious public policy. He emphasized that investments should prioritize sustainable transport and the clean energy transition, supported by financial incentives and clear regulatory frameworks to accelerate the phase-out of fossil fuels.

While adaptation measures, including urban greening, restoring waterways, and improving the resilience of buildings, are becoming increasingly important, Huppmann cautioned that adaptation alone cannot keep pace with unchecked climate change.

"Every delay in reducing emissions increases the likelihood of crossing critical climate tipping points and limits society's future options. We are not prepared for the current state of the climate system. And we are even less prepared for what is coming in five to ten years," Huppmann told ORF. "We need a broad framework that sets out the goals of the transition, and only a comprehensive climate law can provide that."
