Biography
Juliette Martin joined the Risk and Resilience (RISK) program at IIASA in 2018, and now works in the Biodiversity, Ecology, and Conservation (BEC) and Equity and Justice (EQU) Research Groups. She leads and coordinates tasks in the PHUSICOS Project, aiming to demonstrate how nature-based solutions provide robust, sustainable, and cost-effective measures for reducing the risk of extreme weather events in rural mountain areas. Her research focuses on the governance of nature-based solutions, from their initiation to their implementation and beyond. She also recently joined the Horizon 2020 Project EuropaBON, where she is taking a lead role in engaging biodiversity monitoring stakeholders across Europe.Prior to joining IIASA, Martin worked at the United Nations Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) in Cambridge as a Program Officer. There, she supported a Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Project on Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction and lead the development of marine data products, streamlining marine and coastal data to track progress towards global biodiversity targets. Previously, she worked on coral reef biodiversity with the University of Tokyo, conducting research on bottlenose dolphin bioacoustics in Lisbon. She has also been involved in various interdisciplinary research projects including ''Jellywatch'', aimed at predicting jellyfish blooming cycles in the Mediterranean Basin.
Martin is particularly interested in the science-policy interface and how complex data can be made accessible to decision makers. She combines her technical and science-policy background with her experience in project management, as well as her multidisciplinary background in marine conservation, ecosystem services, and policy work.
Martin holds a BSc in Environmental Science and an MSc in Marine Environmental Management from the University of York. She also undertook an MSc in Ecosystem Services at the University of Edinburgh. She is fluent in English, German, and French.
