Biography
Juliette Martin joined IIASA in 2018, and now works in the Biodiversity, Ecology, and Conservation (BEC) and Equity and Justice (EQU) Research Groups. Martin's research focus is on the governance of nature-based solutions for disaster risk reduction and biodiversity conservation. She currently leads and coordinates work carried out within the European project The Hut, identifying governance barriers to nature-based solutions and exploring how they can be overcome. Previously, Martin led work in several EU-funded projects, including EuropaBON, PHUSICOS, and Naturance. She also led a work package on integrating biodiversity into the water-food nexus in India in the fairSTREAM project.Prior to joining IIASA, Martin worked at the United Nations Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) in Cambridge as a Program Officer. There, she supported a Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Project on Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction and led the development of marine data products, streamlining marine and coastal data to track progress towards global biodiversity targets. Previously, she worked on coral reef biodiversity with the University of Tokyo. She also conducted research on bottlenose dolphin bioacoustics in Lisbon.
Martin is particularly interested in the science-policy interface and uses mixed methods in her work. She combines her natural sciences background with her experience in project management, as well as her multidisciplinary background in marine conservation, ecosystem services, and policy work.
Martin holds a BSc in Environmental Science and an MSc in Marine Environmental Management from the University of York, UK. She also undertook an MSc in Ecosystem Services at the University of Edinburgh, UK. She is fluent in English, German, and French.
