As an IIASA research intern you have the opportunity to get hands-on experience in using cutting-edge methodologies to solve complex global issues by working on projects related to IIASA's core research areas such as environment, energy, and sustainable development.
Types of internships:
Paid internships: All paid internships and temporary assignments are posted on our job openings page.
Unpaid internships: Offered to students whose study programs or schools require practical work experience (mandatory internship/Pflichtpraktikum). Although unpaid, it is a great opportunity to gain academic credit, professional experience, networking opportunities, and more.
Who can apply?
Applicants should be enrolled in a university degree (minimum Bachelor’s degree or equivalent) or a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) in a field related to the work of IIASA (including economics, environmental sciences, international law, international relations, natural sciences, political science) at a recognized university at the time of application and during the entire period of the internship. Applicants should be able to work in English.

As a first step please explore the IIASA research programs to identify areas of possible research themes/interests.
In your application highlight which part of IIASA’s research agenda you would like to contribute to and mention your specific skills that would allow you to contribute to research at IIASA. This could include, but is not limited to, particularly course you have taken, programming or prompting skills, research you have already been engaged in, and/or relevant extracurricular activities.
Applications should include the following:
- a letter of motivation (2 pages maximum)
- a CV that describes the candidate’s current activities, previous activities, educational achievements and individual competencies skills (2 pages maximum)
- certificates that verify the candidate’s qualifications and activities mentioned in the CV
- a verification document to prove current enrollment at a recognized university
- the candidate’s preferred hosting unit(s) at IIASA
- the candidate’s preferred start date

Your application will be put onto a roster of potential interns that will regularly be reviewed by the research units. Your application will remain on the roster for 6 months. During this time you might get contacted by a research unit to mutually agree on an internship assignment. Such an assignment may be agreed upon to be carried out remotely.
Duration
The ideal duration of a research internship should be between two and six months.
