Representatives from two Vietnamese provincial governments visited IIASA in October to discuss opportunities for cooperation on sustainable development, climate resilience, and evidence-based policymaking.

The visit, comprising 16 delegates, brought together senior leaders from Thanh Hoa Province and Tay Ninh Province, reflecting Vietnam's growing interest in leveraging scientific research and systems analysis to support long-term socioeconomic development and environmental sustainability.

Representing Thanh Hoa Province was Mr Mai Xuan Liem, Member of the Standing Committee of the Thanh Hoa Provincial Party Committee and Vice Chairman of the Thanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee. The Tay Ninh delegation was led by Mr Huynh Van Son, Member of the Tay Ninh Provincial Party Committee and Vice Chairman of the Tay Ninh Provincial People's Committee.

Welcoming the visitors, IIASA Science Diplomacy Director Susie Kitchens introduced the Institute's mission and science diplomacy mandate, highlighting how integrated systems approaches can help governments address complex policy challenges related to climate change, energy transitions, urbanization, and economic development.

IIASA researcher Dr Gregor Kiesewetter presented the Institute's work on pollution management in the Hanoi region, demonstrating how IIASA research and analytical tools can support policymakers and regional governments in responding to environmental challenges and informing long-term planning.

The discussions provided an opportunity to exchange perspectives on the development priorities of Thanh Hoa and Tay Ninh provinces and to explore how scientific evidence and systems analysis can support decision-making in rapidly developing regions.

The meeting underscored the importance of both international and interregional scientific cooperation in addressing challenges that increasingly require coordination across disciplines, sectors, and levels of governance. It also highlighted opportunities to build stronger connections between IIASA and partners in Vietnam as the country continues to advance its sustainable development objectives.
