The honorary degree was conferred during a ceremony held at Tsinghua University on 22 October 2026. Schellnhuber, who is an internationally renowned climate scientist and pioneer in Earth system analysis, has made significant contributions to advancing scientific understanding of climate change and the complex interactions between human societies and the environment. His work has helped shape international climate policy and foster interdisciplinary approaches to addressing global sustainability challenges.

Following the ceremony, Schellnhuber met with Tsinghua University President Li Luming, who congratulated him on receiving the honorary degree. The two discussed opportunities to further strengthen academic cooperation, particularly in the fields of climate change, energy transition, interdisciplinary research, and talent development.

"I am deeply honored to receive this distinction from Tsinghua University – an institution with an outstanding reputation for scientific excellence. Addressing the great challenges of our time requires us to think beyond disciplinary and geographical boundaries. I see this honor as an encouragement to continue advancing international scientific cooperation and developing the knowledge needed to shape a sustainable future," notes Schellnhuber.

IIASA and Tsinghua University have collaborated for many years on research addressing global environmental and sustainability challenges. This partnership was further strengthened in December 2024 with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding to advance cooperation in research and education. Building on this collaboration, IIASA and Tsinghua University are jointly organizing the second Overshoot Conference, scheduled to take place in Beijing later this month.

During his visit, Schellnhuber also delivered an academic lecture entitled The Future of Everything as part of Tsinghua University's Global Change Science Forum, sharing his perspectives on the future of the planet and the importance of integrated scientific approaches to addressing global challenges.

The honorary doctorate adds to the numerous international distinctions Schellnhuber has received throughout his career and highlights the importance of international scientific cooperation in addressing the interconnected challenges facing humanity.
