The Integrated Assessment Modeling Consortium (IAMC) invites you to join a webinar on "Standardization of scenario data collection via the IAMC data template: past developments and future challenges", presented by Volker Krey, the recipient of the 2022 edition of the IAMC Award for Extraordinary Contributions to the field of Integrated Assessment Modeling.
In the late 2000’s, after the completion of the 4th IPCC assessment cycle, the development of the “new scenario framework” as part of which the Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs) and the Shared Socio-economic Pathways (SSPs) emerged, and the establishment of Integrated Assessment Modeling Consortium (IAMC) model intercomparison projects (MIPs) with Integrated Assessment Models (IAMs) increased in frequency. At that time, it was quite common that each MIP had its own template to collect data from the participating modeling teams. Data compilation in modeling teams was mostly done manually which limited the amount of data that could be collected and also was a source of errors.
At the start of the 5th IPCC assessment cycle, within the IAMC an initiative was started to harmonize data collection efforts across MIPs by developing a harmonized but flexible data template. The Asian Modeling Exercise and the Energy Modeling Forum 24 project were the first MIPs as part of which the IAMC data template was used, tested and improved. Since then, the template was extended in many directions and has been used in dozens of MIPs and scenario collection efforts of multiple IPCC reports. In addition, numerous tools have been developed that allow more efficient use of the data template.
During this webinar, the Speaker will provide an overview of the development of the IAMC data template and discuss challenges that emerged over time as well as ideas how to proceed with the development and maintenance. The discussion time will be devoted to collecting input on how to move forward with the development of the template and related tools.
Speaker: Volker Krey, Research Group Leader, Integrated Assessment and Climate Change Research Group (IACC), Energy, Climate and Environment program, (ECE), IIASA, Vienna | Adjunct Professor in Energy Systems Modeling, Industrial Ecology Program and Energy Transitions Initiative, NTNU, Norway
Moderator: Joana Portugal Pereira, Professor at the Energy Planning Program of The Alberto Luiz Coimbra Institute for Graduate Studies and Research in Engineering, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (COPPE/UFRJ), Brazil
Webinar participation is free of charge and open to all. Each session will last approximately 60 minutes with a 45′ presentation and 15′ for Q&As. Webinar recordings and other shared material will be available on the IAMC website.
