IIASA Director General Hans Joachim (John) Schellnhuber will deliver a keynote at the upcoming New European Bauhaus Jour Fixe Austria titled, Saving the world in style: The value proposition of the New European Bauhaus.
The next New European Bauhaus (NEB) Jour Fixe will take place at the Architekturzentrum Wien on Tuesday, 9 July 2024. The event will focus on the exchange of national and international NEB activities and positions as well as networking among the participants.
Schellnhuber's presentation is set to take place at 10:00 CET on Tuesday and will address the fact that most of the built environment developed across the globe after World War II is highly problematic from the environmental, socioeconomic, and cultural perspective. In particular, the construction sector is one of the main drivers of anthropogenic global warming, while billions of people lack decent accommodations and safe public spaces for interaction.
The NEB was created to launch a vital transdisciplinary discourse about that dire situation and to unleash traditional as well as unconventional potentials for creative solutions. The key words of the initiative are sustainable, inclusive, and beautiful, emphasizing that the built environment should improve (rather than exacerbate) environmental conditions, increase social cohesion, and help to satisfy the aesthetic needs of human beings. The Bauhaus term signals that all this requires a titanic integration effort in the spirit of the historical Bauhaus movement of 1919.
Registrations are possible until Monday, 8 July 2024.
