In 1972 representatives of the Soviet Union, United States, and 10 other countries from the Eastern and Western blocs met in London to sign the Charter establishing IIASA.

The Charter of the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis documents the agreement to establish IIASA.

It outlines, among others:

  • The Institute’s objectives
  • The membership of the Institute
  • The Council and Council Committees
  • The IIASA Executive
  • The staff of the Institute, financial matters and research, among others.

On joining the Institute, every new member subscribes to the Charter and agrees to its conditions of membership.
