In 1972 representatives of the Soviet Union, United States, and 10 other countries from the Eastern and Western blocs met in London to sign the Charter establishing IIASA.
The Charter of the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis documents the agreement to establish IIASA.
It outlines, among others:
- The Institute’s objectives,
- The membership of the Institute, and
- The internal structure of the Institute including the Council, the IIASA Executive team consisting of the Director General (DG), Deputy Director General for Science (DDGS) and the Chief Operations Officer (COO), and the research and administrative staff of the Institute.
On joining the Institute, every new member country subscribes to the Charter and agrees to its conditions of membership.
