Researchers from Cambridge University’s Centre for the Study of Existential Risk (CSER) visited the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) on 11th and 12th July to explore tools that take a whole systems approach to the global risks we face.

Led by Paul Ingram, a Senior Research Associate at CSER, and joined by Sarah Woods, an esteemed writer and creative systems thinker, the visit aimed to explore alternative narratives, systems, and paradigms in order to tackle and mitigate global catastrophic risks.

The visit was made possible through the efforts of the TwR Coordination team at IIASA. By facilitating this exchange of knowledge and ideas, the TwR initiative continues to foster cooperation and collaboration among experts in addressing pressing global challenges.

On 21th of June 2023 the TwR-II Coordination Team at IIASA co-ordinated a special online consultation with the TwR Community of Science and Practice (CoSP) on "Reform of the Global Governance: Global Democracy for the Global Commons". The meeting brought together experts from the TwR CoSP and IIASA scientists to address issues regarding the current state of multilateral systems and the democratic representation within these systems, thus prompting a discussion on the possibility of establishing a global Parliament - representing global citizens rather than nation-states.

The second interview within the TwR-II interview series "In discussion with the CoSP members“ we conducted with Prof. Dr. Diana Ürge-Vorsatz.

Prof. Dr. Diana Ürge-Vorsatz is the Director of the Center for Climate Change and Sustainable Energy Policy and the vice chair of IPCC’s Working Group III - Mitigation of Climate Change. She is a member of IIASA’s Scientific Advisory Committee and has been active in a number of initiatives at IIASA, notably the Global Energy Assessment, where she was one of the main authors. In the first phase of the Transformation within Reach initiative (TwR-I) she played a key leading role in the energy theme. Her expertise is on climate mitigation and urban issues, where her expertise in energy efficiency and buildings makes her one of the world’s authorities.

In the interview she talks about how decision-making systems can be improved to reach sustainability.

For TwR-II we started a series of short interviews with the CoSP members. Within this pool of experts lies extensive and solid knowledge from various professional backgrounds on how to catalyze societal transformations toward sustainability. To acknowledge this and make their research accessible to the wider public, the IIASA TwR-II coordination team created an interview series: „In discussion with the CoSP members“.

Our first interviewee is Maurício Antônio Lopes, who is currently a member of the Advisory Group to the Director General of the The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (UN FAO) and a Senior Researcher of Embrapa Agroenergia, Brazil, of which he has been the President from October 2012 until October 2018.
