Biography

Xiuming Zhang joined the IIASA Energy, Climate, and Environment Program as a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Fellow in June 2024, working specifically with the Pollution Management Research Group.

She holds a PhD from the University of Melbourne, specializing in integrated assessment of nitrogen emissions and mitigation strategies at global and regional scales. As part of her academic journey, she also acquired a master’s degree in ecology from Zhejiang University, China, where she focused on high-resolution NH3 emission inventories and their role in PM2.5 formation in China.

With extensive experience in nitrogen cycling modeling, statistical analysis, and cost-benefit assessment, Zhang has developed strong cross-disciplinary research skills through collaborations with agronomists, soil scientists, economists, and environmental engineers. She is currently working on the SynCAN project, which explores synergies between reducing greenhouse gases and nitrogen pollution. She also contributes to updating and optimizing data for the Global CHANS and GAINS models to strengthen the nitrogen and agricultural module in GAINS models, further enhancing IIASA's leadership in integrated environmental solutions.
