Biography
Willi Semmler joined the IIASA Economic Frontiers Program as a senior guest research scholar in June 2023 to collaborate on the theoretical and empirical modeling of dynamic, possibly disruptive, processes and dynamic policymaking.He is the Arnhold Professor of International Cooperation and Development at the New School for Social Research, New York, and was a professor at American University, Washington, DC, and Bielefeld University, Germany. He was also a Fulbright Professor at the University of Economics, Vienna. He is an honorary doctor of the American University Europe-Fon and was an evaluator of research projects for the EU Commission and a visiting scholar at the European Central Bank (ECB) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) while working for the Independent Evaluation Office at the IMF. He is also a member of the Center on Capitalism and Society at Columbia University, directed by Edmund Phelps (Nobel Laureate in Economics), a research associate at La Sapienza, Rome, and an associate editor of the journal Econometrics and Statistics.
His research is on empirical macroeconomics, financial economics, and the economics of climate change. He has numerous journal and book publications, and his research has appeared in publications of the World Bank, the IMF, the ECB, and the International Labor Organization (ILO). He recently coauthored a book on "Sustainable Macroeconomics, Climate Risks, and Energy Transitions: Dynamic Modeling, Empirics, and Policies" (https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-3-031-27982-9).
