Biography

Tapio Palokangas received his D.Phil. degree in 1985 at Oxford (U.K.) and in 1993, became Professor of International Economics at the University of Helsinki. In 2000, Cambridge University Press published his book "Labour Unions, Public Policy, and Economic Growth." He was co-editor of the books "Growth, Trade and Economic Institutions" for Springer Verlag in 2005, "Stochastic Economic Dynamics" for Copenhagen Business School Press in 2007, "Dynamic System, Economic Growth, and the Environment" for Springer Verlag in 2009, and "Green Growth and Sustainable Development" for Springer Verlag in 2013. His other publications include articles e.g. in Applied Mathematics and Computation, Economica, European Journal of Political Economy, German Economic Review, Journal of Economic Dynamics and Control, Journal of Economics, Journal of Institutional and Theoretical Economics, Journal of Population Economics, LABOUR, Labour Economics, Oxford Economic Papers, and Scandinavian Journal of Economics. He was Associate Editor of European Economic Review for 2003-2013. Currently, he is Co-Editor of Economics Open-Access Open-Assessment Journal.

Professor Palokangas visited IIASA in 2005 for a workshop on economic growth. He has been the organizer of two IIASA conferences: "Applications of Dynamic Systems to Economic Growth with Environment" in 2008 and "Green Growth and Sustainable Development" in 2011. He subsequently returns to the Institute once a year as an academic visitor. His main interests associated with IIASA focus on optimal control theory and differential games with applications to research and development (R&D), economic growth and environmental economics.
