Biography

Shrey Patel is a guest research assistant in the Agriculture, Forestry, and Ecosystem Services Research Group of the IIASA Biodiversity and Natural Resources Program. As part of his work, he focuses on developing carbon accounting approaches for bio-based products and bioenergy pathways within the BeWhere modeling framework, supporting systems-level assessments of carbon removal strategies.

In addition to his role at IIASA, he is a PhD candidate in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania, US. His research focuses on the engineering and systems analysis of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) pathways, combining process modeling, life cycle assessment, techno-economic analysis, and integrated systems modeling to evaluate the deployment of carbon management technologies under real-world resource and infrastructure constraints. His current work spans sustainable aviation fuels, direct air capture, and spatially explicit optimization of bio-based CDR pathways.

Originally from Ahmedabad, India, he holds a B.Tech. (Hons) in Chemical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras and has conducted research in India, Germany, Canada, and the United States. Beyond research, he enjoys hiking, mentoring students, and fostering academic collaborations.
