Biography

Ryan Tan is a researcher in the Sustainable Service Systems Research Group of the IIASA Energy, Climate, and Environment Program, where he contributes to the development of FeliX — a system dynamics-based integrated assessment model that captures feedbacks and nonlinear interactions driven by human behavior. His work on FeliX primarily focuses on demand-side mitigation strategies.

As part of the CHOICE project, an EU Horizon initiative, Tan is leading the development of an online tool to make FeliX more accessible to non-experts. His goal is to support social learning and participatory scenario development around the global food system, encouraging dialogue on how consumption behaviors lead to environmental impacts and also trade-offs between health and sustainability.

Beyond his core research activities, Tan is enthusiastic about discussions on deep uncertainty and is unlikely to pass up opportunities to work with computational methods for exploratory modeling and analysis.

He holds a master’s degree in engineering and policy analysis from Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), where he received the Justus & Louise van Effen Scholarship, and a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the National University of Singapore. He has previously contributed to policy-oriented research at institutions including the Institute for Water Policy at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy (LKYSPP), the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), and the Centre for Liveable Cities (CLC).
