Biography
Mykola Gusti is a Senior Research Scholar in the Integrated Biosphere Futures Research Group of the IIASA Biodiversity and Natural Resources Program. He first joined IIASA in 2005. His scientific interests include mathematical modeling and data processing applicable in environmental research. He is currently involved in development of the Global Forest Model (G4M) used for analyzing climate mitigation options in land-use change and forest management activities.Gusti graduated from the Lviv Franko State University in Ukraine in 1996, where he completed his diploma thesis on macro models with Chebyshev approximation in the field of radio physics. Following his graduation, he worked as an engineer in the Department of Complex Dynamical Systems Modeling at the Research Institute of Information Infrastructure in Lviv, Ukraine. He defended his PhD dissertation on Modeling the Dynamics of the Carbon Budget of Ecosystems of the Carpathian Region in Ukraine in 2002 and defended a habilitation thesis on Mathematical Models of Processes of Carbon Dioxide Emissions and Sinks in Forestry and Land Use Change in 2018. From 2001 to 2002, he worked at the Laboratory for Climate and Environmental Sciences (LSCE) in France, where he dealt with modeling the transport of trace gases using version 3.3 of LMDZ, a prominent global atmospheric General Circulation Model (GCM) developed by the Laboratoire de Météorologie Dynamique (LMD) in Paris. From 2002 to 2005, he returned to the Research Institute of Information Infrastructure in Lviv, Ukraine, to work on the development of geo-information technologies for greenhouse gas inventory and prognosis of the carbon budget in Ukraine.
