Biography
Muhammad Awais is a research scholar in the IIASA Energy, Climate, and Environment Program. He is also affiliated with the Institute of Integrated Energy Systems as a research analyst, leading the development of the Canadian Integrated Assessment Model (MESSAGEix-Canada).Awais has played a key role in multiple projects (NAVIGATE, ISWEL, COMMITTED, ECEMF) focused on developing integrated multi-sectoral scenarios across global, regional, and national scales. His research interests include understanding optimal pathways for the energy, water, and land sectors, with a particular focus on climate action and its associated impacts. His work emphasizes the development of MESSAGEix Integrated Assessment Model, which informs the “what-if?” questions about the future pathways of climate change and sustainable development.
In addition to his research, Awais actively participates in multiple stakeholder events, where he presents and trains stakeholders and policymakers, helping them understand complex models and transforming them into actionable, impactful policies.
Awais obtained a PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Victoria, Canada, with a focus on climate adaptation scenarios in the energy, water, and land domains. He also holds a master’s degree in Hydro Science & Engineering from the Technical University Dresden, Germany, and a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the National University of Computer & Emerging Sciences, Pakistan.
